While the Maldives is undoubtedly the most famous destination for overwater villas in Asia, several other countries across the continent have also embraced the water bungalow experience, offering travellers unique and often more affordable alternatives.
The development of water bungalows in Asia outside the Maldives began in the 1990s and early 2000s, inspired by the success of similar accommodations in the South Pacific. Countries like Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Qatar, and Vietnam began introducing overwater stays, blending local culture, tropical landscapes, and luxurious design.
