WATER BUNGALOWS IN THE CARIBBEAN
Water bungalows in the Caribbean are a relatively new addition to the region’s luxury offerings, with the first true overwater villas introduced by Sandals Resorts in 2016 in Jamaica and later in Saint Lucia. Unlike the Maldives or Bora Bora, where overwater stays have long been a staple, the Caribbean was slower to adopt this concept due to environmental and structural challenges. However, once introduced, they quickly gained popularity among North American travellers seeking the overwater experience closer to home.
Currently, the Caribbean has around 100–150 water bungalows, mainly offered by high-end resorts such as Sandals Royal Caribbean, Sandals South Coast in Jamaica, and Sandals Grande St. Lucian in Saint Lucia. Some boutique options also exist in places like Panama, Belize, and Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
While the number is modest compared to destinations like the Maldives, Caribbean water bungalows are gaining fame for offering an exotic, luxurious escape without the long-haul flight. They’re particularly popular among honeymooners and couples from the U.S. and Canada, seeking that iconic overwater experience in a familiar, culturally rich setting.
